As Augustus speaks at Isaac's support group he tells stories of his fear of oblivion. ![]() Instead of letting the cancer consume him, he is controlling the cancer indirectly. He demonstrates audacity because he proceeds to defy the odds in his own unique way. From this we are able to see several characteristics of Augustus his audacity, determination, drive and originality. By placing the cigarette in his mouth but not lighting it, he is able to satisfy his desperate need for control. It has been proven fact that cigarettes will kill you. Due to the fact that he lives with a side effect of cancer (dying) and the fear of oblivion, he is determined to remain in control no matter the situation. Throughout the novel we see Augustus use the metaphor of a cigarette to take control over his own life. If you were to ask anyone within the novel what they remembered most about the infamous Augustus Waters there would be one common answer his metaphor. Quote: "It's a metaphor see, you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing." In the movie he is portrayed by Ansel Elgort. Overall Augustus is a popular favourite among the female fan base. He begins to leave his stubborn life behind to have fun through adventures such as his trip to Amsterdam. Later, after he meets Hazel Grace Lancaster we see Augustus turn into a gentleman. Though he is still supportive of his best friend Issac. At first he demonstrates himself as laid back and cool, but he does emphasize his ego as he discusses his fear of oblivion and his desperate need to be remembered as a hero in the cancer support group.
